Healthcare
AI in a
healthcare
environment.
Healthcare presents particular challenges for AI. Staff are often already using ChatGPT or similar to draft letters, summarise notes, or search, quietly and without anyone deciding whether that is appropriate.
Privacy, safety, clinical responsibility and public trust cannot be afterthoughts. FAIRE focuses specifically on the practical governance questions that arise when AI becomes part of healthcare work.
Progress,
with safeguards.
We want healthcare organisations to benefit from AI. It can reduce administrative burden and support better delivery of care. But healthcare also involves sensitive information, vulnerable people and high-consequence decisions.
Responsible governance enables adoption rather than preventing it: it gives staff confidence about what they can safely do while keeping patient safety, confidentiality, professional judgement, transparency and human oversight central.
Data & confidentiality
Healthcare organisations handle some of the most sensitive information people entrust to any institution. Staff need clear guidance on what information can be entered into AI systems and what controls apply.
Human oversight
AI can assist with healthcare work, but responsibility does not disappear when AI enters the workflow. Human review, professional judgement and appropriate escalation remain essential.
Staff confidence
Policies only work when people understand them. Practical training helps staff recognise risks, use approved tools appropriately and know when not to use AI.
FAIRE's approach is informed by the GDPR, the developing EU AI Act framework and emerging Irish guidance, including HIQA's national guidance on the responsible and safe use of AI in health and social care.
